If you like a hearty, earthy, sourdough flavor in your bread, then you would love this bread. It makes a great sandwich, toast with butter or cheese toast. My husband even likes it with peanut butter on it. It is filling and keeps you satisfied for a long time, in addition to you getting all the many health benefits of pumpernickel. We are on our 3rd or 4th order of this bread. It also truly stays good on your shelf for a long period of time. It is dense and heavy, so it's not like typical sandwich bread. If you only like fluffier, airy bread, then you may not like this. For it's perfect. We love hearty grainy bread and we love sourdough. This is a combination of both. It's delicious and a good buy, for what you're getting.

All the way from Germany and priced that way too! (but $2 a loaf cheaper than Whole Foods!) You must TOAST it! Tastes great raw but will crumble in your hands. Set toaster on HIGH (or midway + bagel), gently break a piece in half (to fit), gently put them into the toaster, then BUTTER when done, and CHEW, CHEW, CHEW!THIS is a SUPER addition to breakfast if you eat light (like me) ... boiled egg, bowl of oatmeal with raisins and yoghurt, coffee, and this great tasting bread! YUM!Try all the flavors to find your favorite ... I like 'em all!Addendum 21 Mar 16: I bought these and six rye last on 28 Oct 15 at an average price of $18 for six. Today I went to reorder and found that my breads are both listed at $30 for six. Thus, sadly, I've dropped my rating from 5 stars to 1 star. Amazon must think it's xxx doesn't stink ... unfortunately, it now does.

My first subscribe and save order of this bread arrived today. I never had it before, but it met my nutritional needs and the reviews are good, so I thought I'd take a chance and it was a good choice. However, there is never a way to know the expiration date of perishables we buy on Amazon until arrival, and such is the case with this bread. I'd asked a question about this and customers responded 6-12 months on the shelf. Well, my case just arrived, February 27, and the expiration date is 7-7-13, just over four months. This short for me as I don't eat a lot of bread, MAYBE a loaf a month, and when I do buy bread at the store, I never finish a loaf before it spoils. I wanted a pantry bread, not a freezer bread.Flavor is hearty, you can feel the grains; texture heavy and crumbly. I like it. I didn't expect to open and find the slices to be long across the top. The package is not resealable, so it's necessary to put it in something else once opened.About the expiration date: I talked with Amazon support about the expiration date and was refunded half the purchase price, which I didn't expect. This kind of service is why I come to Amazon to buy just about everything, first.Edited to add: You MUST refrigerate (or freeze, as some reviewers have suggested) this bread once opened unless you eat it within 3 days. My first loaf stored in an air tight Tupperware began to mold at that point. Good bread.

Rather bitter taste and slices break too easily making toasting next to impossible.
