Good concept that needs improvement

The game has a demo that I encourage everyone to check out before buying. I've had the game for a while now and I plan on getting the sequel if the improvements are there. My main issue comes from when you aren't throwing punches.Good:Straight, Jab, Hook, Upper Cut, and combos are great. The joy cons feel natural to hold and will read one move the same way it would read another, but it's just more forgiving when it comes to scoring. The ability to dress up the trainers and customize them is fun, if not fully fleshed out. I'm just saying we could have gotten Skyrim sliders and I don't think it would have been a detriment to the game. The Japanese voices are great and I'm glad they remain an option. You can customize the songs you hear for your workouts, but a lot of them feel like they are the same 3 songs.Bad:The English voices leave a lot to be desired. It could be that repition sets in when you understand all the words, but some sound like it was their first gig. It would have been great if they had hired some real boxing trainers to do the voice for the workouts. Anything that isn't punching sucks. This isn't the kinect. You're holding slightly better wii motes in your hand and they don't do a good job on measuring how you move when you duck, weave, side step, block, or dodge. I watched the tutorial for weaving and I still can't get it right. What I can do is shake the controllers as I attempt the move and most of the time it'll read as a success. A lot of the cardio comes from bouncing back and forth while waiting to punch. It's easy to follow out of rhythm and feel like you are out of sync with your trainer. You are unable to reshuffle your daily work out if it's full of moves you don't like. All measurements are in metric.Final:I got this after getting Ring Fit and I play this more often. It's a good work out, I like the skill building (if you take your punches seriously), and it works great as a 'work out anywhere' program. If it's on sale and you love the demo, I'd say buy it. I plan on playing it every day of November. Maybe I'll update review before the second one drops.

Fun, but controllers don't pick up defensive moves well

Fitness Boxing is a fun challenge. You can set fitness goals, change the amount of time you spend working, turn on a pretty basic warm-up and cool-down stretch function, and change your instructor. The more you hit your goals (if you complete a daily workout over a certain number of days, or you earn a certain number of stars for doing well in a session, or throw a certain number of punches), the more features you unlock. New clothing for trainers, new songs, new workout sessions, etc. It's supposed to keep you going to see what else you can discover, which is nice.I've been playing for about the last 25 days straight, which is important because the game changes the farther you get into it. The first few times you play, you're just throwing straights and jabs, hooks and uppercuts, and then you put it all together into combos. That part is really fun—you're punching and trying to keep up with the rhythm and the instructor. It's also a real workout, and you will feel it the next day. What isn't fun is when you get to defensive moves. Nintendo did a really bad job with this part. This is stuff like ducking, blocking, and stepping to the left and right—not active, but passive moves. The Switch controllers have no problem conveying to the docked console that you're throwing a left hook correctly, but for some reason can't pick up any movement when you side-step, and that's a huge problem. You get a "MISS" warning on the target, your points drop, your stars drop, and pretty soon the instructor is summing up your session by saying that you could really be doing better—even though you're definitely moving to the side, ducking, and doing exactly what the screen says. You can do a basic runthrough of the move in a low-stakes training session that doesn't count toward your points, and it still won't register. And again, this is even as the Switch has no trouble at all picking up on 6-step punch combos coming one right after the other at a fast pace. It makes no sense.Frustrating as all get-out.What's supposed to be a simple lesson in just moving around and stepping from side-to-side becomes more of a negotiation just to get through the workout, and takes you out of the simulation. You'll spend more time trying to figure out how to cheat, basically. Instead of stepping left and right, just tilt the controllers, which oddly triggers a "PERFECT" rating more frequently than doing the actual movement does, and reduces the amount of workout you're getting.Again, very fun when you're punching, and it is a good workout—as long as you aren't wasting time trying to find workarounds for shoddy programming. Nintendo needs to give an update or allow users the option to remove defensive maneuvers altogether, because there's honestly no point.

Definitely a great cardio workout

I did about a 35 minute workout routine complete with stretching and this definitely brought my heart rate up to the fat burning zone, if you want to do some cardio in the comfort of your room this is a rock solid option. As far as gameplay this is very much a mix of DDR rhythm game mixed with boxing. I'll sum up everything below..ProsGreat cardio and the voice acting for the non stock trainer (any of the ones not on the demo) are great at encouraging youHit detection is... not as bad as I thought it would be! The HD rumble and sound effects make for a satisfying hit when you time it perfectly.ConsSuper easy to cheat.. if you want to sit back on your couch and just swing your arms you can... it won't determine the difference between various punches and only cares about whether or not the joycon is being moved.Music is bland, you recognize the track but it's a bland instrumental version I wish they gave you more options. All in all if you need an excuse to get off your couch and burn some calories with your switch? This is one way of doing it. But I'll sum this up this way... this seems to be the type of game whose results is directly affected by how much effort you put into it, that is to say that if you want your heart rate up? You better get up and move, add some extra things like ducking and weaving as well as moving your legs. I did and my arms and legs are on fire right now!
