Have you ever been called a freak or a geek? Have you ever felt like one? Luke Jackson is 13 years old and has Asperger Syndrome. Over the years Luke has learned to laugh at such names but there are other aspects of life which are more difficult. Adolescence and the teenage years are a minefield of emotions, transitions and decisions and when a child has Asperger Syndrome, the result is often explosive. Luke has three sisters and one brother in various stages of their adolescent and teenage years but he is acutely aware of just how different he is and how little information is available for adolescents like himself. Drawing from his own experiences and gaining information from his teenage brother and sisters, he wrote this enlightening, honest and witty book in an attempt to address difficult topics such as bullying, friendships, when and how to tell others about AS, school problems, dating and relationships, and morality. Luke writes briefly about his younger autistic and AD/HD brothers, providing amusing insights into the antics of his younger years and advice for parents, carers and teachers of younger AS children. However, his main reason for writing was because "so many books are written about us, but none are written directly to adolescents with Asperger Syndrome. I thought I would write one in the hope that we could all learn together." Review: Perfect for younger reader - Great younger view and perspective!

Freaks Geaks and Aspergers Syndrome
I was advised to read this book due to some issues that were arising with our aspergers daughter. The text is easy to follow, Luke - the teenage author discusses his difficulties very clearly from a personal view as well as asking other family members for their input. I found the book informative and easy to get through, it helped me see the difficulties that my child is experiencing from a different angle. The book is now doing the rounds of family members although the child concerned still refuses to read it - so far !!!!! I was worried that it would be very emotional but Luke disscusses Aspergers as though he is having a general conversation which helped!!

Great book and very pertinent!
All in all a great book. This is exactly the book I needed for my 13 year old Aspie who is dealing with bullying in junior high. The book is a very easy read - I knocked it out in a few days - so parents can read it first and then hand it to their Aspie. I don't think you need to read it cover to cover either - there are chapters on bullying, diet, dating, sensory stuff, etc. so I recommend reading the first 2 chapters and then explore. Luke offers some very helpful advice - kid to kid. I think the bullying chapter alone is worth the price of the book, given how traumatizing it is to a child. I was glad to see at least some of our courses of action lined up to what Luke suggests. My only world of caution - it's a small one - is that the book is written by a young English author so there are numerous terms that are regional in nature that at least an American reader would puzzle over. Most are deduced through context but may trip up your child. Examples: "A levels", "games teacher." In retrospect I wish I highlighted them and/or defined them in the margins as I read, because they started easy and then got more inside.
