When I need a quote, this usually has something that fits. Plus, it is a joy to learn about our literary her&history.

Book Depository is consistently a reliable seller that I've become happy to order from.I'm not enough of an expert to give a very worthwhile review of the authors and works selected for the volume, but at first overview of the contents I'm happy that I'll find a good sampling of the hundreds of years of great English verse. My only personal regret so far is discovering that the older selections are presented in the spelling of their time, which for a novice like myself will make it quite challenging to read. I suppose I'll get a more accurate feeling of the sound of each word, but fear that unless I read each one multiple times I'll lose the feel of the sound and flow of the verses themselves. In my younger years I wouldn't have had the time to undertake such an effort, which at 70 years I do, but alas I probably will have more difficulty with the task than I might have then.

A deeply satisfying book of the best of English poetry. Well-organized: chronologically by Author's dates. I was raised on the Norton anthologies- but the OBEV is the English versus American standard and carries a much fuller repoitoire of poetry alone. I admit to buying the book because of the deep love and esteem Horace Rumpole carries for it - but it didn't disappoint me - it's sheer beauty!

Arrived earlier than expected. In excellent condition, except for a few markings on the beginning pages. Would prefer it didn't, but not a big deal.

I bought this for an older lady I work for who is a bit uncomfortable with computers.So between the ease of ordering from Amazon and the wonderful quality of this book she was ecstatic. Thank you so much! Sorry I rushed the copy over to her and did not get a photo.

I would have preferred more poems from the more well known poets. Maybe hare two volumes instead of cramming everyone into one thick volume.

In a world so speedily running toward the cliff of lack in culture, taste, and use of OUR language, this volume was a welcome relief. On my "mindful days" I can escape everything and enter a world of civilized, verbal discipline. Some of the poetry has been adapted by a few words that keep the thought and meter, e.g. Chaucer's happy band of pilgrims. Even after too-long-days, the volume is always at the ready for a dose of "culture" that is altogether too fragile in our politically correct world.

Angelehnt an Quiller-Couch in detaillierter Inhaltsangabe, Liste der Autoren und Index der Gedichtanfänge, ergänzt Ricks die Titel der Gedichte, vor allem auch neuere Autoren wie T.S. Eliot, nicht in der 2. Auflage von Quiller-Couch (Erstpublikation 1939, Reprints bis 1998. Darunter ist von T.S. Eliot "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", das viel von Eliot's "The Waste Land" erfasst. Äußerst geschmackvoll gestaltete 690 Seiten in Hardcover, Titel in Gold auf schwarzem Leineneinband.

Lovely poetry book!

This is a grand survey of English poetry from the 13th to 20th Centuries. All the famous and many lesser known (to me) poets are included. It is a fine collection of great works. The print, the paper, the binding are all excellent.

Per chi ama la Poesia e soprattutto quella inglese,questo è un libro ideale.E' una specie di Bibbia della poesia britannica e spazia da anonimi del XIII secolo per arrivare a Seamus Heaney,nostro contemporaneo.In mezzo a questi due estremi c'è di tutto,anche limericks e autori non strettamente britannici.Può anche essere utile come testo per una tesi di laurea,vi si trovano liriche,canti medioevali,satire,inni,odi e sonetti,è veramente una immensa raccolta di poesia.Molto interessanti e curate la prefazione e l'introduzione.
