Fluval 3/404-3/405 Impeller Cover for Straight Fan Blades

Prefect replacement part for my old Fluval 440 that I use in the turtle tank. Both the tabs were broken, and by replacing it increased the pump’s water movement greatly.

My Fluval 404 canister filter was making a rattling / grinding sound when I came home one day. It turned out the impeller cover clips (the small clear plastic pieces on opposite ends of this product) had broken off somehow. I wasn't about to spend $5-10 replacing a flimsy piece of plastic after the stupid clips broke, especially for an Amazon add-on item. Instead of immediately replacing the cover like I should have, I re-seated it over the impeller, figuring the very strong magnet of the impeller, insertion of the the impeller rod in the cover, and suction together would hold the broken cover in place just fine. Wrong.If your Fluval 404 unit starts rattling or grinding, don't be like me and wait or jury rig it. By waiting to replace this impeller cover after the clips broke, the impeller must have spun incorrectly (filter still made a slightly less loud rattling sound, water flow still lower than expected) to the point that the sheath of the plastic blades ground to a nub and ordering a new impeller cover did nothing to fix the rattling sound or low water flow. Take a look at the photo to see the difference between a new and broken impeller.My lesson: By waiting, instead of having a $5 replacement part (the cover) I had $30 of replacement parts (the cover plus a new impeller, because Fluval will not sell only the plastic - you have to buy an entirely new impeller magnet, too). It's frustrating that Fluval designed the impeller cover with such flimsy clips, so I bought two in case this happens again. It's also frustrating that Fluval made me buy an entirely new impeller instead of a replacement impeller plastic blade, which I imagine would have cost far less. On the bright side, this canister filter has held up for over a decade and done a good job keeping my aquarium clean and fish alive. So, I give it 4 stars.

After the clip on the impeller cover snapped my Fluval 405 destroyed its impeller and shaft.I purchased all three items in a deal and they arrived ahead of estimates and undamaged.They were exactly as described and original parts not cheap copiesThey fitted perfectly and the filter is working even better than beforeI had read other people's comments about the lack of packing for the impeller and I agree with them.The manufacturers plastic box was sent in a thin card envelope which offered it no protection.If mine has arrived damaged (which it didn't) then I would not of been as happy as I was.
