Tech test, New server

Bought to test if something could be done, initially was going to make a custom NAS. Changed that and replaced a pi4 (pihole ad blocker) and an HP slimline circa 2009 ubuntu server. 4 Sata SSD (1TB) and a 256GB NVMe on a pi5 4GB. also running Plex Media Server and pihole and other stuff. USB laptop sata hdd auto backup, and usb fan for cooling. The old HP slimline ran 75 watts on boot, new pi5 server runs 15 watts on boot. approx $5 /mon in savings for overall build cost of $350.

Overpriced on Amazon, but decent NAS option

Amazon pentahat is way overpriced. This can still be a cheaper option than other NAS's though. The RPi pentahat uses alot less power than other NAS's too. It is a lot of work to setup though. The pentahat slots cannot accept 3.5" drives connected directly. For that I needed longer cables and a different enclosure. These cables were useful for using 3.5" HDDs: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084Q8L6GK?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2I connected the pentahat to a RPi5 and 3 HDDs to create a RAID 1 (mirroring) between two enterprise NAS Seagate IronWolf Pro 22TB 3.5" HDDs and an additional Seagate BarraCuda 8TB 3.5" HDD. Setup was difficult, but with a lot of youtube help, I eventually got it all up and working. The case didn't work for the 3.5" drives, so I had to 3D print one of my own. I also added three fans. One fan to cool the RPi. The other fans to cool the HDDs. One of the fans is quite and always on. The other fan is controlled by the GPIO pins of the RPi and only turns on if the HDDs get warm. The Pentahat unfortunately doesn't have good info on which GPIO it uses, so I guessed for which GPIO would be available for the fan. I also needed a strange GPIO breakout/90 degree splitter to be able to use the GPIO.I used open media vault, which had difficulty with the 22TB drives in RAID, but it eventually worked. I typically use SMB, MiniDNLA, SSH. Openmediavault-md 7.0.4-1 was an important plugin for getting the RAID to work.

Quick, functional, and performant NAS build

The SATA hat was absolutely a charm to work with.I built a Raspberry Pi 5 NAS in almost no time. It was extremely easy to set up, there is a lot of information on the RADXA sote as well on youtube. The sole improvement that I would suggest is the replacement of the external power port with USB-C interface.

Missing cable.

Came without the PCIe cable, set up a return and had to order another unit, which will take a much longer time to reach me now. When I get the new unit I'll update the rating if it pans out.I'm very frustrated at this time.

It does what it is supposed to do.

Installed it on my Pi-5 8mb board with the submitted posts etc... installed my 4 HD's and went through the appropriate procedures, and it all worked fine. Suggest using an antistatic mat and wrist strap.
