Nicholson's Rumi Anthology
An excellent introduction with a nice balance between poetry - first half, and prose - second half, by a translator whose integrity in translation is a standard that many more populist 'translators' could well imbibe.

An Honest and Very Readable Collection of Rumi's Works
Still the the most authoritative (and truly representative ) selection of Rumi's works . Nicholson also was an excellent , very readable TRANSLATOR - NOT A SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETER , putting his or her own ideas into Rumi's verse. Nicholsonknew the historical and cultural background from which Rumi emerged and doesn't try to make him into a non-Islamic New Agecaricature .

It could provide more historical context in the form of footnotes for laymen like me who are not experts in 12-13th century Isla
This classic Nicholson translation was a relief after only having been exposed to the more popular New Age ones. It could provide more historical context in the form of footnotes for laymen like me who are not experts in 12-13th century Islamic poetry.

Cycles in popularity since the invention of the printing press.
For the love of One god. Sufi. Very attractive! Much hated by non-Sufi fundamentalist sects.

good introduction, translations are shaky
to me, they seem a bit contrived because he insists on having an english rhyme scheme and meter which makes me think he probably gave away something in translation. The introduction is a good basic introduction to the biographical data and accuracy available about the poet, some of his influences, and subject matter. I usually shy away from rhyming translations, but this is pretty good, and there are some excellent poems and stories in here...
