Q: how does this plate go under a door handle...can you make a hole some how?

That plate goes on top of the surface of the door. Put it in place, pencil mark the 4 or 6 predrilled holes in the brass plate, remove plate, drill small holes in your door where your 4 or 6 pencil marks are located, replace the plate into position, screw in the supplied screws through the plate and into those drill-holes you made in your door. 

I think its brass plated. I have brass at all the other doors at this church. It looks good, serves it purpose and was reasonably priced. I'm very satisfied with the product.

Q: Can the plastic film coating be peeled off?

Products like this imported from China and elsewhere across the seas are covered with a light plastic film to prevent ocean air from attacking the metal finishes, and to protect against careless installers who install products before the should be. Remove the film by starting at a corner and stroking it inward with a moistened "dry" thumb, or carefully lift it with a utility knife blade, or apply a piece of Scotch Tape and lift it, using the tape to grip a larger film surface than you can. Remove the plastic film slowly, or you may tear it, compounding removal difficulties. A light application of "warm air" from a heat gun or personal dryer may be helpful.

Used different than its intended

I used this to protect the wood framed sliding door. Our dogs tend to scratch at the door when wanting out. I have refinished the door multiple times when the idea of doing this struck me. I attached with double sided carpet tape. No screws....so far. Looks nice and really protects the door.

Tarnishes quickly

I coated it with wd 40 as seen on some sites on the web. I tried cleaning the discoloration with brasso and it help a little.
