Birds of Argentina and the South-west Atlantic (Princeton Field Guides)

I’ve never actually been to Argentina, so I can’t speak to this guide’s utility in the field, but I’ve birded in some other South American countries, so am familiar with many of the species. I’m generally an avid bird-watcher and collector of field guides.This long-awaited and long-delayed guide is simply a masterpiece. It’s a reasonable size & weight, smaller and lighter than the Sibley guide to N.A. birds, but a bit bigger & heavier than the Collins guide to Europe (to use two familiar & popular examples). It is in the modern style, with minimalist species accounts and maps facing the plates. Some text is as little as a sentence or two; for trickier IDs like some of the Pipits there are paragraph-long descriptions. The illustrations are excellent, particularly the hummingbirds and parrots. The plates appear slightly washed-out: I wish they’d been a bit glossier and more saturated, but the matte appearance probably helps reduce glare in the field, and sometimes over-saturated images can be a problem as well (as in the 1st printing of Sibley’s 2nd edition).There are several innovative and thoughtful little touches, such as illustrations of distinctive Furnariid and Icterid nests; sonograms of rails, tapaculos, and pipits (groups heard more than seen), and even an appendix of plants shown on the plates with the birds.An excellent and exciting new guide!

The illustrations are fantastic. Size is fine. Needs a little more info on habits and habitat.Finally we’re getting top notch guides for Latin America.This and the new Colombia guide are neck and neck for my favorite guide.The Brazilian guide is a disappointment with sub par illustrations and maps and needs to be redone.The Ecuador, Peru and Chile guides are all very good as is the Central American guide.Bolivia needs a guide as do the Guianas/Surinam and the Mexican guide needs redone in a big way.

I bought this book for my wife as a Christmas present. I proved to be a very helpful aide in allowing her to determine what birds would be in our area due to migration patterns. We spent ten days in the vicinity of San Martin de los Andes. With the help of a very knowledgeable fishing guide she was able to identify 37 species of birds. Our Argentinian fishing guide was understandably irritated that the book has no Spanish names for the birds.

The colored plates are very good, the range maps show adequate detail. Appears to be a very helpful resource. Compact enough to be used as a field guide. I paid $27.49 in January 2023 for a new copy, fyi. Very nice intro section on habitats. Looking forward to using it soon.

Excellent field guide. Great setup, artwork, and maps. Not too large. Each species could use a little more life history information.

Planning a trip to Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, and the sub-Antarctic islands in January 2024. Already a useful study guide (November 2023)
