Cadmium Free Yellow: Purr-fectly Safe and Brilliantly Bright!
Cadmium Free Yellow: Purr-fectly Safe and Brilliantly Bright! I have cats and one of them loves to dip her paws into my dirty paint water jar… so I try to avoid anything toxic (especially cadmium) whenever possible. I’m glad Windsor and Newton has a line of alternative cadmium free hues. Cadmium free yellow was exactly what I needed for a tutorial I was following. The color looks essentially identical to its cadmium counterpart and still offers great results. In short, it’s a safer choice that doesn’t compromise on quality. My artwork (and my curious cat) both thank me! Edit: Reviews for additional colors Quinacridone Magenta: Perfect Magenta for a Clean, Vibrant CMYK Watercolor Palette I wanted to create a limited CMYK-style watercolor palette for travel, and after some research, I decided on Quinacridone Magenta as my “M.” I already owned a version from another reputable brand that used PR202, but I found it a bit too dull and dark for my taste. After comparing options, I chose Winsor & Newton’s Quinacridone Magenta, which uses PR122—and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The color is bright, transparent, and mixes beautifully with my lemon yellow and Phthalo Blue (green shade), producing clean, vibrant secondary colors without any muddiness. This pigment has become a staple in my portable palette and has truly elevated my color mixing experience. Highly recommend it to anyone building a compact, high-quality travel set! Yellow Ochre: A Must-Have Color for Any Watercolor Beginner I’m currently learning watercolors, and the tutorial book I’ve been using calls for Yellow Ochre in nearly every project. After working with it, I completely understand why. This warm, earthy yellow is incredibly versatile. I’ve used it in landscapes, food illustrations, animal studies, and more and it pairs beautifully with burnt umber. I’m continually discovering new ways Yellow Ochre enhances a painting. Its semi-opaque, granulating quality adds great texture and depth, and since it’s made from a single pigment (PY43), it behaves predictably and mixes cleanly. With excellent lightfastness on top of all that, it’s become an essential part of my palette— and it’s staying there for good!

From Budget Paints to Professional — This Is Where I Landed
I’ve gone through the full watercolor journey — starting with budget paints, moving into student-grade brands, experimenting with several professional lines, and eventually settling on Winsor & Newton as my primary paint. This color is a perfect example of why. The pigment strength and transparency are on a completely different level compared to lower-grade paints. You get clean, luminous washes without the chalkiness or muddy mixing that I struggled with earlier in my learning process. A little goes a long way, so even though professional paint costs more upfront, it actually lasts longer for me. This particular color has beautiful depth and versatility. It mixes easily, layers well, and creates rich warm tones that are hard to replicate with cheaper alternatives. If you’re still using student paints and wondering whether professional watercolor is worth it — yes. There is a noticeable difference in performance, control, and final results. Winsor & Newton has become my go-to brand, and I keep coming back to it even after trying others.

Love W&N Pro paints and Payne's Gray is my go to for Night Skies
W&N Pro watercolors have been the best Paints I have used. I have tried several and these are my favorite. The pigment load is pretty dense and the ways these colors interact with water and explode on the paper is very pleasing. These are my favorite for wet on wet painting. the Payne's Gray in particular is my go to color for painting night skies. While the Payne's Gray made by other brands tend to be closer to a true gray, W&N Paynes gray is more of a dark Blue/Black color closer to what other brands might call Indigo. I included a painting of a night scene where I used The Paynes Gray as the primary color of the night sky as an example.

just get it. it's the best one out there.
this is the best paint I have. I can't explain it exactly but in every way, this paint is top of the top shelf. The granulation is amazing. it blends so well with everything. it's a stiff cream paste in consistency. the wet paint looks different from the dry though---darker, more muddy. it dries lighter and richer in tone, more vibrant. I tried three other brands and there was no comparison. this is the best cerulean out there.

Cadmium Lemon is unique in mixing with other colors.
The Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolors have good depth of color which makes them superior for mixing. Cadmium Lemon is a great choice as a blending option

great color, too pricey
This is a wonderful color to use to tone down brighter colors, but the price is too high for such a tiny tube. For the same price you can get a larger tube at art supply stores.

Superb Intense Colour
Wonderful water-colour paint. One word of caution if you haven't used Artists Colours. you will find the colour much more intense than with budget paint. This means your paintings will have more zing. And also you'll probably find you don't use so much paint, which will offset the extra you have to pay for Artist's colours.

Good variations of tone possible
Beautiful dark green. You can vary this colour quite a bit between a lighter version to nearly black/green. Good for dark waters or shrubs in shade. Delivery was as promised.

Falsche Erwartung
