Nice try, but no cigar. The Bone Collector settles instead for mere competence and the modest rewards of a well-handled formula. With a terrific cast at his service, director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) turns the pulpy indulgence of Jeffery Deaver's novel into a slick potboiler that is grisly fun only if you don't pick it apart. Noyce expertly builds palpable tension around a series of gruesome murders that lead us into the darkest nooks of New York City. Now a bedridden quadriplegic prone to life-threatening seizures and suicidal depression, forensics detective Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) gets a new lease on life with a sharp young beat cop (Angelina Jolie) who's a wizard at analyzing crime scenes. She does field work while he deciphers clues from his high-tech Manhattan loft, and as they narrow the search their lives are increasingly endangered. As this formulaic plot grows moldy, Noyce resorts to narrative shortcuts, using perfunctory scenes to manipulate the viewer and taking morbid pleasure in his revelation of the murder scenes. And yet it all works, to a point, and the cast (including Queen Latifah and Luiz Guzmán) is much better than the material. If you're looking for a few good thrills, The Bone Collector is a pretty safe bet. --Jeff Shannon Review: This is such a clever and well-acted movie! - This is a terrific movie from 1999 and holds up extremely well. Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie and Queen Latifah & others play their characters so well. Good thriller . . .keeps you on the edge of your chair! Also, it is very heart warming as Denzel is a mostly paralyzed cop that was injured as a Police Chief and a genius at figuring out murders through evidence (he's known for it). The sweet relationship with Angelina who is a police officer and him really makes you love their characters. Great movie! DVD was sent on time, was in great shape and played perfectly. Review: A very good Crime Thriller Movie - Most excellent crime thriller movie!! Keeps you wondering and on the edge. Highly recommend this movie! I have always liked Denzel Washington's movies..Him and Angelina Jolie along with Queen Latifah play really good parts.

The Bone Collector on Blu Ray
I ordered this film through Amazon but the order went to Movie Mars as the distributer/seller. The order was made on Nov. 25th and did not arrive until Dec. 8th. I had to call Amazon to see where the order was since the rest of my order made on the 25th got to me very quickly as usual. When I received the Blu Ray, I noticed that on the back of the disc box it said 'Rental or Resale'. I have never seen this before on a new purchase. I opened the Blu Ray and expected to see a damaged disc or one with fingerprints on it or something. I was wrong and the disc was just fine. Never the less, I would avoid purchasing anything through Movie Mars as the seller. Now that I have that rant out of the way, There are already a great many reviews here providing a summary of the plot, opinions on acting, etc. Therefore, this review will only focus upon the actual quality of the transfer of 'The Bone Collector' to Blue Ray. My 5 stars represents the quality of the audio and video of this Blu Ray and not on the movie itself. Keep in mind that the quality of what you see and hear also depends upon the quality of TV monitor you are using and its accompanying home theater processor and speakers. I have a pretty high end,7.1 esoteric system and am judging the Blu Ray off of that. One last thing, I do wish Amazon would separate the film reviews into Blu Ray, Standard Def and Streamed categories. It is a pain to have to scroll through a ton of streaming reviews just to find a review of the Blu Rays. VIDEO QUALITY.... Once again, there are previews for other films which simply take up space on the disc causing you to pay for a film that is now more compressed than it needs to be just to make room for advertisements. I really hate when this occurs on Blu Rays I buy and it occurs all too frequently. As a result of this compression the average MBPS rate was in the low to high twenties when it could have gone much higher. There is a generally warm and natural appearing color grading given to this film and decent detailing in the dark or shadowy areas. Focus is on the soft side but that is not a criticism, just an observation. Contrast was surprisingly good, even in darker scenes. At no point did I see any real grain and certainly no artifacts. I did expect the grain as this is an older film but the transfer is very clean in my opinion. Nice job all around. AUDIO QUALITY.... My big surprise of the day. The Dolby Digital True HD 5.1 audio track on this film was considerably better than I expected. While audio levels were lower than I usually find, making me up the volume on my surround processor, once I adjusted the volume the audio stayed consistent so I had no need to then roller coaster the remote volume control. While dialogue was easily discernible and transparent throughout the film, what pleasantly surprised me was the terribly effective use of discreet steering of the dialogue between the mostly front left and right surround speakers. Dialogue in most films, despite other foley fx, usually is always steered through the center channel. In 'The Bone Collector' there is ample dialogue coming from either the left or right speakers especially when Denzel's character is speaking to Angelina Jolie's character via phone or their com system. (By the way, Jolie can really act as this film proves) This use of discreet directionality, as well as the many pans of audio between the sound stages, impressed the heck out of me and, I believe makes the disc demo worthy for showing off your home theater system. Also, unexpectedly, the LFE channel gets a strong workout in many of the scenes. 5 stars on the audio for sure. EXTRAS.... I don't count previews/ads for other films or UV or 4K as extras. While this review was not a comparison between the two formats, I do have the Standard Def DVD of 'The Bone Collector'. Many of the extras on the Standard Def disc are not present on the Blu Ray release which has only a directors commentary and a 'Making Of' doc which has a 4:3 aspect ratio and appears to be a copy of a making of used for television. Not too impressive on this end. Is it worth it to upgrade from your Standard Def version to the Blu Ray? While the SD release did have a choice between DD and DTS compressed audio codecs, that the Blu Ray utilizes an uncompressed DTS codec makes it certainly worth it for the amount of audio steering this film contains. I do not believe that this film was remastered, but the Blu Ray was fairly pristine and worth the upgrade. I do hope that this review has been of some help to you in deciding your purchase. All my blu ray reviews focus only on the actual quality of the transfer to blu ray so I hope some of them may be of help to you as well. Thanks for reading.

Okay
There are wonderful film adaptations of novels such as "The Green Mile" and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". There are adaptions that improve on their source material, the best example being "The Shawshank Redemption". And there are adaptions which deviate so much from there source material that one would be hard-pressed to call them "adaptations", such as "Along Came a Spider". The Bone Collector falls directly in the middle of the spectrum. Unfortunetly, the works of Jeffrey Deaver may not be the most adaptible for the big screen as the gems of his writing are often lost and we are left with an almost-generic action thriller. I certainly didn't mind some of the changes made (Denzel Washington is a terrific actor and proved it yet again in this film.) I think that a lot of minor plot points, such as a budding relationship between the two main characters, added up are what made the novel great. But Hollywood can only make a movie so long, so I blame this less-than-amazing adaptation on the difficulty of adapting a work as complex as that which comes from the mind of Jeffrey Deaver. I will say that any Deaver fan can still get a good viewing or two out of this, especially if they are as dedicated a Lincoln Rhyme fan as I am, but other than that, it really is just a generic action/crime thriller...even with the sometimes excessive killing. It's up to you. Enjoy.

Blu Ray is clear and worth it
Good acting from Denzel and the very beautiful Angelina Jolie. Was glad to see Queen Latifah in the movie and she wins one’s respect and like for her even more. An interesting plot. Keeps a person’s interest throughout the movie with a lot of suspense and other actors in the movie did a good job.

This film/DVD has been available for a long time, but I don't remember seeing it before l;ast night. The DVD is excellemnt quality (bars top and bottom), very good sound and optional subtitles. Extras not seen by me.. The film benefits from a gripping plot and a good cast with Washington and Jolie on top form (and wasn't Michael Rooker a great bad a..s). I must say the violence and threat of same is very strong, and there is a gory finish, along with the occasional "F" word. It deserves the "15" cert! Perhaps I have seen and read so many similar films/books that I actually guessed the villain, but I stress...Guessed!. Adults only and a good solid thriller.
