Great reference for new and experienced modelers.
Great for beginners and even for someone who has been doing models for a while. I used to do these type of models religiously, but I got out of it for a few years and wanted to start back up but I knew after all that time there had to be some better methods to doing some of the things I used to do. So several websites pointed me in the direction of this book and all in all, I went into it looking at it with a "beginner's" mind set so I could "relearn" based on "newer" technology with these type of models. I'm glad I did. Even with having prior experience, this book taught me a lot about platform builds and gave some helpful tips and tricks for scenery, track layouts, etc. that I didn't previously know even back then. So far I've taken two of the track layouts from the back of the book and combined them into a double track layout. I'm still working on the buildings (making a residential area as well as a "business/industrial district" so I haven't really started any scenery items, but I have the platform built adn the track laid out where I want it. I'll post some pictures as the layout begins to come together as a whole (it's an 8' x 6' layout so it will take a bit to get to that point). But this book gave me several new ideas for my layout that will absolutely work perfectly with what I'm trying to do. I highly recommend this book to both new and experienced railroad modelers! Very good source.

Great train modeller's starter book
I found this book very informative and useful as I start into model trains. I am an experienced modeller but mainly with aircarft and ships with some dabling in dioramas. My kids are big into Thomas wooden railway and I thought that model trains would be a nice natural progression; trouble was I had no experience with model trains. I dropped into a model train store and had a chat to them and brought a starter set. This was how I became aware of Bachmann's E-Z Track but before I launched into anything serious I need to do more research. I trolled the internet and whilst there was plenty of useful information there was no cohesive single source. So I decided to buy a book. The title of this one caught my eye so I ordered it. It is an easy read, written in plain language and explains technical terms as they arise, perfect for a beginner. It has a natural progression from easy layouts to the more challenging and gives good advice on how you should progress as you gain experience. Highly recommended for beginners.

Very good starting book
I'm just recently starting a model train set, so I bought this book along with a beginner train set. Some of the things in the book are common sense, about 20% of the book is common sense. The other 80% of the book is very useful. It teaches how to build a train set. There are 13 chapters, ranging from track planning to weathering. This book gives an introduction on a lot of basic and detailed things to do to make a realistic train set. It gives a lot of detail for beginners. It gives various layouts of sample tracks to build, so we amateur builders dont start with absolutely no clue what to do.The only problem of this book, and the only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because it doesn't go in-depth enough on some things, and the 20% common sense.I highly recommend this book for beginner railroad builders.
