poor story telling
The book read more like a catalogue than a novel. Two dozen chapters covered facets of the sea relation without connecting to each other. The lighthouse chapter read more like a list of names with a paragraph on each. I did not pull me in to the story of the island like many other local histories have.Als; there were many typo's and conflicting details that made reading annoying.

Fascinating read
Not yet finished but I’ve really enjoyed it so far. We are transplants from MA and not really familiar with Connecticut’s early history. We do sail the Sound and reading about early events is really interesting. Having a good map of LIS helps put events in perspective.

Amazing piece of work for serious historians.
Bill Bleyer's credentials are impeccable and the sources that he had available to him make this work unique. He capitalizes on over thirty years of reporting and feature writing for our Long Island newspaper "Newsday", to create a comprehensive book about all aspects of Long Island history that could in any way be characterized as "nautical". It is a subject of great interest to me and one that I did have some knowledge of, but I still learned a lot!
