Q: Chamberlain's instructions seem quite extensive (21 steps). Did people actually do all 21 steps found on their website to replace 41A3489?

I doubt anybody even reads the instructions--I certainly didn't read them. The only tricky bit is to make sure that you don't let the chain jump the sprocket during disassembly--otherwise you will end up as I did and do a bit of trial and error to get the chain right again. It's really a trivial repair job if you have any household repair experience at all, and if you have only a little, this would be a good place to start. You'll want to have some basic tools like sockets and wrenches. Do pay attention to the instructions that come with it about the master link, although it is pretty easy to figure out without the instructions. Honestly, a really simple repair that took me about 1 1/2 hours from unpacking the kit to finish, and I have a very difficult to access system, I worked in an unhurried fashion, and I messed up and let the chain jump during disassembly adding some extra time to the project. As a final piece of advice, these are the basic steps as best as I remember them. One, detach far end of rail from motor so that you can remove old piece and slide new one on. Two, undo old piece from chain and remove. Three, slide new piece on rail and fix it to chain. Four, reattach rail. When you are done there are adjustments on the motor box to fine tune the garage door up and down settings. Take your time, try not to let the chain jump the sprocket or mark the chain and sprocket so you know what are the correct lengths, and probably don't try to do this in the middle of a cold, bitter winter. Otherwise, instructions? What instructions?
