Each piece is a ball - size somewhere between a ping pong ball and a golf ball.

How long is each piece?

Each piece is in a “lump”, but, if you drew one out straight, it would be about 4” long

Can this product be used for thrums?

Maybe. I have never tried thrum knitting, but this is very soft and has a decent staple length. Each ball is quite small - somewhere between ping pong ball and golf ball size, so there's not a lot of each color. But the gradation from one to the next is slight, so they make for lovely blending.
