Question 1

I have a brand new chain - should I take off the factory lubricant?

Accepted Answer

it does make a huge difference on how clean the chain is. this method is best used when you do multiple chains at once. I bought the MSW 1#, crock pot, multiple jars to clean the chains, ultrasonic cleaner, I use simple green/industrials to strip the OEM lubricants, I do this twice, 20 minutes, heated on the ultrasonic cleaner, twice in mineral spirits and twice in pure grain alcohol. I use a compressor to make sure all the cleaners are blown free - I still air dry for a few hours. I move the super clean chain around in the liquid wax for about 10 minutes (chain is same temp as the wax). I use the wire hanger/see MSW site. I let it drip dry/cool - the wax is stiff when cooled. I run the chains for about 400-500 miles and swap to a new wax chain. once 850-1150 miles are on each chain they are discarded. I use the KMC 10/11XL chains. When they are due for a rewax, I heat them up in the ultrasonic and repeat the cleaning process. Keeps my drivetrain super clean, no black greasy crap, no dirt buildup - my drivetrain always looks new and it's super clean. This process works best when doing multiple chains at once. I do anywhere from 3-4 chains each time. doing one is too much work I think. Good Luck and Happy Pedaling

Question 2

How many applications are in one bag? Do you have to use the entire contents each time you lube / wax the chain?

Accepted Answer

I've been using the same 1lb bag for a year in a small crockpot. At least a dozen chain waxings on three different chains so far and I can see at least 3-4 more happening.

Question 3

To what temp does the wax need to be melted to for proper chain application?

Accepted Answer

I don't think that the temperature is significant, rather it needs to be in liquid form. The chain is emersed in the liquid wax. You should be cautious in heating the wax though, it needs to be done by indirect heat like hot water or a cheap rice cooker.

Question 4

Is this company the same as the company that makes Molten Speed wax-- the link at top makes this look like a volleyball maker?

Accepted Answer
