Good shock damping without compromising performance riding

UPDATE: 11 MAR 2016While I liked the 5019, I opted for the Planet Bike Comp saddle, which was only 145mm wide. This 5019 is 203.2 mm wide! The Comp saddle is 333 grams. However, I just recently switched from the Comp saddle to a WTB Volt Race, 135mm wide (narrow) that weighs 243 grams. There's minimal padding and shock absorption designed into the Volt Race. I have found over the years that the excess padding and shock absorption aren't really necessary. The Comp saddle has minimal padding, but I'm able to do 20+ mile rides without pain - although the cut-out isn't enough to relieve more perineal pressure. My bike is more of a hybrid road bike, and my riding posture has about 45 degrees of torso lean, so your mileage will vary. I measured my sit bone width to be 110mm, so I can fit the more narrow 130mm wide saddles.Original review:Planet Bike 5019 Men's ARS Spring Anatomic Relief SaddleThe Planet Bike 5019 is the widest men's saddle that still qualifies as a road bike saddle. It is 8 inches at the widest part of the saddle, and has elastomer springs - which look a lot like rubber bushings. One of the things I noticed is that it is easily a pound heavier than the original road bike saddle that came with the bike. Some reviewers felt that it is a cruiser seat, although I have to disagree to a point. Yes, it is quite wide for a race saddle but I didn't have any issues with rubbing while fully tucked in on my road bike. I did have to adjust the seat to find the right spot. I'd say it is more of a hybrid between a cruiser seat and a race seat. It certainly felt much more comfortable than the standard seat on my bike.My bike is a 25" road bike from Wal-Mart (Genesis GS700), which came with a Vitesse "Race" saddle. I noticed that Kent International manufactures a lot of different branded bikes for department stores, and that Target and Meijer also had bikes with the same horrible saddle (6 inches wide, hard as a rock). After 2 miles of riding, my sitting bones were numbed by the original saddle. The original saddle weighed 12.5 ounces, while the Planet Bike 5019 weighed in at 1 lb 10.7 oz. I did notice that the 5019 can be a tad wide if you are a dedicated road racer, there's another Planet Bike saddle that is narrower at 7" which is the ARS Standard. I opted for the 5019 because of the springs and the gel padding. After biking 16 miles over the weekend, my butt feel fine even with the numerous potholes, ruts, and bumps on the paved bike trail. The Planet Bike 5019 did the trick and is made of a similar material to my Ducati motorcycle seat cover. I did have to adjust the 5019 several times before I got the right setting. I'd recommend doing the same before you consider returning it. The width did not interfere with my thighs while riding, and I did numerous different maneuvers to test it out. I biked fully tucked in at maximum gear to check my top speed and did not notice any rubbing. I counter-steered as much as I could through the chicanes and corners and didn't feel any interference from the seat. I cannot fathom going back to the original saddle.Overall: 5/5 stars. The elastomer springs (bushings) could be softer to provide even more damping capability, but the padding helps out as well. Some people might find it too wide, I did not have any issue with the 8 inch width. I'm 6'3" 160 lb and prefer this seat over the original 6" wide race saddle.

Talk About Saving One's Behind

There are plenty of other choices for a comfortable seat and although I can't afford trying most of them; I got amazingly lucky with this purchase and can confidently recommend this Planet Bike seat. I've owned other seats for my racing bikes and they are definitely of a different league, but when it came to purchasing one for my mountain bike, I thought I should try something outside the box. Again, so happy with this selection. As advertised, it is amazingly adaptable for almost any mount. The construction is very sturdy and you can actually see the quality. The design looks more appropriate for a cruiser, but works just fine for my purposes. As for the comfort; 35, 40, even 50 miles will feel like nothing. It's two pelvic contact points are large enough to accommodate some discrepancy in size without sacrificing the comfort. There are two layers of cushioning and you can definitely feel them especially where your legs rub against the seat. The bounce is easily handled by the two springs and never feels like a trampoline or "bottoming out" when you take the bumps on the trail. And because it is specifically a men's seat, the channels and strategic opening are in just the right spots to cool you off in the desert heat. I can see where in competition, the width of the back section could interfere, but I'm not racing this bike, so for my excursions this seat checks all the right boxes, including price.

Almost perfect (for me - your mileage may vary)

I'm an older - well, downright old - guy who is riding 20 - 25 miles 3 or 4 days per week. Raleigh hybrid bike, mostly paved bike trails and roads, but some off-road trails, too. I had been experiencing chaffing in my nether regions and pain in my sit bones. I tried wide, padded seats, but they added to the chaffing and they caused moisture accumulation. I tried narrow seats and they solved the chaffing and sweating, but caused numbness. This seat has padding in just the right places, is wide enough for support. I absolutely love the vent channel down the middle which keeps me dry and cool also serves to keep pressure off the parts where you don't want pressure. ;-)That said, it will take some getting used to and fine tuning of the position. At first I felt like I was teetering back and forth on the padding and my weight was thrown forward, but now that I have played with the adjustments its just about perfect.Have only done a series of short rides to tweak the positioning and one 10 mile trip so far. As my heading says, its nearly perfect. Will post an update after some more miles.

About the most comfortable I have tried!

So I ride a mountain bike and commute to the mountain bike park in my area on the mountain bike. The seat that came with my Trek was a joke. About every “comfortable” saddle “seat” I have tried just didn’t seem really much more comfortable than the stock mtb seat. This seat is the most comfortable I have tried. Really great for just commuting but once I run single track I rarely sit in my seat much but the little I do it was comfortable and did not get in my way. I like that it has a short nose that allows me to lean forward to run up hills without squashing my grapes on a long nose. All and all, if I can’t find anything to beat this seat I will be satisfied with this seat’s comfort. I will say it’s got a bit of weight to it but not a big issue for mtb. May be an issue to road bikers. All in all this saddle is well worth the expense.

Comfy but not for strong riders

This is an extremely comfy saddle. The spring action and padding soak up every little bump, and you get no pain on your sit bones. The cut-out for the male seat is the largest I've seen and that is a huge benefit. The only problem with this saddle is that it is more of a cruiser saddle and strong riders will find that it restricts leg movement causing some pain in the back-inner thigh. I'll probably be buying the next smaller size as that seems more fitting for my style of riding (15-30 miles on paved paths, moderate hills).

Excellent seat, and great seller

My husband is a pretty big guy and was finding his old bike seat to be really uncomfortable and to not give enough support. This one is amazing, and he loves it! Very comfortable and he can ride on our bumpy country roads for as long as he wants. As a bonus, the seller of this product is absolutely FANTASTIC to deal with and responsive to questions. You won't regret this purchase!
