Managing the Software Process

Dated and fundamentally strong.
I'll leave my original review at the bottom because I honestly think when you're wrong you need to own up to it. My original assessment of the book was plain wrong.Yes, the book is dated and the information is pretty old now. This is probably a good thing though. Mountains of data was collected from organizations that were studied, and valuable lessons were learned. Like any engineering discipline you build from work done before you. I'm now looking at this book in that light. What does it take to go from a chaotic process to one that really works? First you have to assess where you are, and admit that you are in chaos. If you can start there and get buy-in from senior management that the investment is needed to improve your processes only then can you break out of it. This book presents a terrific guide for how to do that given the necessary resources. My original review:It *was* a great book in its day. Now it is fatally outdated. The section on Software Quality Assurance is a curious thing at best. I'm looking forward to something written in this century.

Textbook for MS Computer Science Course, Advanced Software Process
This book was the main textbook for Advanced Software Process at CSUF. The book is a very easy read with relatively short chapters. Despite being published in 1989, a lot of the practices, methodologies and theories are still very relevant today. It is a very good read for anyone interested in managing software development projects and also to find ways on improving your software process through measurement tools and documentation.

A crucial book in the field of software engineering
This book is crucial to a thorough understanding of software engineering principles. Watts Humphrey is one of the most important forces in the field, and this book is vital to anyone wishing to understand the intricacies of managing a large software development project. Be aware that this book is not easy reading. I would only recommend it for academics, or for the serious practitioner.
