Well worth

For 62$ and free shipping this is an excellent deal. I have only received it today and although it worked well right out of the box I did spend some time flattening the base and fine sharpening the blade, it cuts thin and even slices s from soft and hard wood (oak) without too much effort, it feels to me a little heavy in the hand (860 grams). The parts and finish are a bit on the rough side and proportionally large. the maker I believe is Soba - made in India. I do own another shoulder plane by this company which I also like using. To conclude if you do not want invest in a high end tool but need a fine tool to work with at a very friendly price - do not hesitate.

A step above the cheap hardware store planes.

Some people are quick to compare this plane to the high-end planes made by Veritas or Lie-Nielsen. This block plane is not made nearly as well as those, but it also costs only about half as much. If you're willing to put in the work to polish it, this gem will shine.First, the good. This plane is solid and heavy. They were generous with the iron and bronze when making these planes and that translates into good momentum and stability. The overall shape is comfortable in the hand. The adjusters work well and the blade bed was machined flat. Now for the bad. The sole was out of flat. There was a minor dish in the middle and a huge dip at the toe. It took over an hour of lapping to get the sole flat. Moving on to the sides, I saw that they weren't square to the sole. One side was so far off that it took some serious file work to get it close enough to start using my lapping plates. An hour or two of work on the sides. Checking the blade, the bevel was ground correctly but the back was very out of flat. Another hour on the lapping plate there. There was a big casting flaw just inside the mouth. Just a few minutes with the file fixed that, but you'd think that such an obvious defect would be caught by quality control before leaving the factory. Various parts inside had rough edges, plus there were rough milling marks on many surfaces. This did not affect the performance of the plane but it does prevent the adjustments from working as smoothly as they could.I'm not expecting perfection at this price, but I do expect a little better. After several hours of work, this plane is in great shape. I'm willing to bet it now performs just as well as one of those high-end planes. It was a lot of work to get there but I saved about $80 over the Lie-Nielsen. I think that's a fair trade.

Really nice plane

Overall I liked the fit and finish of the plane. It is extremely well built and cuts like butter. I liked the feature of adjusting the throat according to the depth of the cutting edge. The deeper the cut the wider the throat. The plane fits in my hand well and I know it will be in my shop for many years to come.

I really like this plane, it works great. metal needs prep before it will work like it's supposed to.

The steel on the bottom of the block plane, and the plane blade itself is poorly cast and milled. It took a fair amount of surface prep (coarse sharpening) to get it to my desired level of sharpness.Other than that, it holds an edge great, and I plane end grain frequently.

This plane is great! Buy it.

I do alot of furniture and cabinet building so planes are a very important tool in my shop. I've owned Stanley and Buck planes and they don't hold a candle to this one. The plane arrived covered in a protective coating and well packaged. As with my other planes, I expected several hours of "tuning" before use. Not so with this one. I wiped the whole thing down with mineral spirits, made a few passes on the sharpening stone with the blade and I was creating beatiful curled shavings 15 minutes after I opened the box. The shoe was perfectly flat and highly polished. The working surfaces were rust free and lacked ugly mill marks. The adjustments are easy to use and settings are easy to lock in. For those of us who care about such things, this plane is also pretty! Excellant fit and finish on the top side and a very comfortable grip. I strongly recommend this plane.
