Edible Mushrooms: Safe to Pick, Good to Eat

Loved the detailed description and new up to date photos of mushrooms in the wild. Perfect gift for my family member, and I was thrilled to keep them safe while introducing a new hobby.

I bought this book on a whim to add to my collection as the price was right and the reviews were few. Glad I did...I am an Eastern North American Picker and the book covers many species across the Northern Hemisphere. Some of the species covered are European only, though only a couple.Mushrooms Covered: 40 Edibles (Boletus, Chanterelles, toothy mushrooms, corals, milkys, a few gilled etc) and 9 Poisonous, including the typical troublemakers (Destroying, Deathcap, Deadly Gallerina). The focus is on safe picking so it is somewhat limited.The mushroom titles are from a European Viewpoint as the author is Swedish, so I had to read a bit on each to get the North American common names. Many I recognized from the pictures anyway and often enough the names are the same.The best part of this guide is the Illustrations. They are absolutely beautiful and of professional quality. Each specimen has a full page illustration, and a series of specimen growth stages for identification as a good guide should. I consider this book to be a great addition to my collection for pictorial comparison alone. I am still learning my Boletes and this book will be helpful.

Excellent pictures and descriptions of many common mushrooms. Good section on the deadly poisonous ones too

This book covers 40 edible mushrooms. I love the detail on each mushroom - size, range, habitat, etc. - as well as the close up pictures of notable features. I didn't care much for the personal mushrooming experiences but I was easily able to skip them as they are italicized. These authors should make a mushroom book that includes non-edible mushrooms.

Like the multiple color photos of each species as it makes identification easier. However, this is not a field guide. Not only are there a limited number of species covered, a few can be found in Europe only. This will make an interesting coffee-table book but not that helpful for foraging in North America.

This book is entertaining, has good pictures and enough information to keep you interested, not too technical, can't wait for spring so I can get out there and use it in the bush

This book is an excellent source of knowledge, with actual images instead of illustrations like books I've seen before.

The book is ok. But if you want to get more serious about mushroom picking, I would get the Mushroom Audubon of North America instead. I'll probably never really use this book. Maybe as a cross reference with the other book.
