Mütter Museum Historic Medical Photographs

The Mutter Museum in Philadelphia is a fantastic display of medical history developed in the second half the nineteenth century. If you've toured or are considering touring the museum and are looking for photos of many of the interesting exhibits the book you are looking for is The Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. This book is exactly what the title presents - it is very small but well done sample of the thousands of photos which are only part of the museum's treasures. The book is a great exhibit of the early history of medical photography which parallels the early development of photography as an art and science. The selection was done with taste and an appreciation of the value of the material for consultations as well as the education of physicians in training and subsequent years in clinical practice, Dr. Mutter's purposes in developing the museum. Dr. Mutter was a pioneer in seeking to improve the lives of patients who were at that time described as monstrosities. The photos are tasteful and very well presented. The brief descriptions are appropriately limited to the information available on the original images.

A criticism regarded the small presentation of photography but I sense it would have qualified the image of the medical problem. An interesting book to view and read. This along with "Mu(t)an(t)s" by Armand Marie Leroi makes a great duo. However, it is not for the coffee table as most people may find it disturbing.

Great souvenir of an incredible (but crowded) Philadelphia museum. I bought it on my smart phone from the museum and it was waiting for me when i got home across the country. I feel guilty paying less for it through Amazon than at the museum, but it wouldn't have fit in my luggage.

I’ve always been fascinated by historic medical photography, as well as the pathologies of all sorts of diseases and deformities. This book does a good job of showcasing many different illnesses pictorially and with accompanying text. My only grievances would be that the pictures are quite small compared to the size of the book, and I would enjoy learning more about each photo as some photos had very limited descriptions. The Mütter Museum has once again shown how diverse the nature of disease and deformities can be.

My husband was not happy with this book. It is just old pictures without explanations of the diseases. In the era of information you can see more explicit photos on the net.

This is a decent freak book. It's not the holy grail of freak books that will really entertain your friends like the fictional freak book from Curb Your Enthusiasm, but it's pretty good.

I love these! Its almost like a time machine and just getting a glimpse into medical problems and people who suffered them but also the advance and artistry of photography at the time. If anyone interested in medicine and old photography! I hope the mutter makes more!

I made a pilgrimage from NYC to Philadelpha to see this museum (takes a whole day) - absolutely most amazing place (outclassed only by the Royal Society Museum in London). They were out of stock on this book when I visited earlier this year, and I'm glad to have been able to get a copy.

Bought for my sisters birtday she loves it :)

It's a great book but if you have kids, this is one for the top shelf.

Tecnicamente il volume è ottimo. Bella copertina rigida, ottime dimensioni, carta pregiata, ottima rilegatura. Prezzo non proprio competitivo rispetto a prodotti analoghi, anche se in effetti prodotti analoghi non ce ne sono, poiché ciò che qui rappresenta la differenza sostanziale è il contenuto. Credo vada detto che le immagini di questo libro possono disturbare certo l'osservatore sensibile che ci si avventura per pura curiosità, ma rappresentino invece motivo di studio e analisi per chi è più del settore. Le foto d'epoca di pregevole fattura sono esplicite e crude per certi versi, e fanno di questo libro un qualcosa di unico nel suo genere, da tenere lontano dalla portata di bambini o ragazzini.

Abbastanza soddisfatta mi aspettavo più foto su questo catalogo per il prezzo pagato .Ma comunque è un bellissimo libro.
