A Totally Immersive, Comprehensive and Scholarly Masterwork on Digital Printing
If you only read one book on the topic, this should be your choice. It will take you from theory and basics to the most professionally necessary intricacies of digital printing formulas, techniques and best practices. It will make you ask why you didn't learn all these things years ago. Johnson is absolutely an expert in this field. Huge amount of information, so you won't be able to skim it - it's quite comprehensive.

More about how to spec printing equipment than about making prints
This handsome volume badly disappointed me. I think the proper rating for the book is about one and a half stars, but I gave it two out of generosity. If you don't have a printer and are looking to buy one, it gives a pretty good round-up of the choices, technologies, and papers. The problem with this kind of thing, of course, is that it is necessarily dated--so it can't really serve as a buyer's guide. If you already have a printer--I have an Epson 4800--and a source of digital images, you won't find much information here about how to make great prints. The only section on the actual print making process shows the dialogs for one printer, probably the author's. Totally unhelpful unless you have that printer (and you've probably already figured out how those dialogs work if you have that printer). The section on RIP software is way overview, and doesn't provide any decent guidance on how to proceed with it.I'm not given to writing negative reviews, and I don't often return books (as I am with this one), but in the face of all the positive feedback for this book I feel compelled to provide my opinion. As I said, if you are looking to buy a printer, this might help you understand the basic technology issues (although the models have changed since the book was written). Otherwise, the only use I see for it is as a "gee whiz" coffee table book for would-be digital printers rather than a serious reference manual.

Outdated: An Enormous Waste of Time and Money
This book, vastly outdated, is a colossal filler of unconstructive space which goes on and on with unwanted and irrelevant paragraphs about persons and histories I couldn't care less about. The book starts by losing sight of its purpose and then deteriorates as it goes. I bought it for specific instruction in digital printing, not for interminable backgrounds of the evolution of digital printing and the scientific analysis of the digital picture. If I'd wanted a history book, I'd have looked for one.

Depth, breadth and clarity
This is an excellent book both in the information it provides and in the way it is delivered. Although there were few topics in the book which were entirely new to me, my understanding in those areas has been geatly enhanced. The author's writing style is clear and does not assume much prior knowledge. The speed at which you read the book will be determined by how new the topics are and thus how carefully you need to read things. There is an almost perfect balance between depth and breadth, everything seems to be covered and any more depth could really only come from ones own hands-on experience. The book itself is divided into chapters of roughly thirty pages each which makes each one quite digestable. The book is well illustrated and has tables, diagrams and expamples throughout. The book provides URLs for relavent resources and the author has a website which is a significant resource in its own right.Although this is a paperback book, the spine of the cover is not gummed into the perfect binding which holds the pages (it is similar to the cover of a hard back book). This means the book can be left open on a desk without having to crack the spine or place paperweights on it to keep it from flopping closed.
