Clymer Honda GL1800 Gold Wing (2001-2010)

If you own a Goldwing of the years covered by this book, you _need_ this book. I'm someone who prefers to do as much hands-and-tools-on maintenance as I can (had to draw the line at changing a tire--although this book helped me get the wheels off), and will always get the factory service manual for any vehicle I own. I picked up the Honda Service Manual for my '04 Wing, and while it's good and complete, it's in places imperviously technical.This book is written for people who want to know not only what to do but why to do it (and why to do it in _that_ order). The photos are for the most part clear (all b&w), the charts are very clear and detailed, and the steps for the conduction of any item of maintenance on the bike are well spelled out. Using this book I had no problem doing half a dozen different maintenance tasks and upgrades this past summer, and am actually looking forward to doing the same next summer (you don't just buy a bike for the ride, you buy it as well for the opportunities it presents...).If I had to make _any_ complaint about the book, it would be that although it's very clear on telling you what to do where and when in the course of a task, it doesn't give you any clue about what tool to use (and with motorcycles, it can be any one of a dozen different-sized little tool things). I took to writing down in the text of each task what size hex wrench or socket I needed for any given task; that way next time I want to change the oil, remove a wheel, work on the brakes or add an upgrade, I've got the proper tool at hand already. (The editors really blew that one.)But I'm very, very satisfied with this, and would highly recommend it to anyone who owns a bike of the make and vintage covered here. Even if all you ever do is change your own oil, the book's worth it (as said, it's LOADS more readable and usable than Honda's official guide).

I sold my '03 and got an '06......too bad all the changes are on the CD, not in the manual.
