DK Eyewitness New England (Travel Guide)

I love to travel both in the U.S. and internationally. I truly find the research and planning to be half the fun in preparing for any trip. Over more than 50 years of buying travel guides from various publishers, I keep going back to Eyewitness. They are thoughtfully arranged, succinct, and accurate. They are fun to read and remain remarkably up-to-date for coming years.

.... BEFORE TRAVELLING TO NEW ENGLAND

I have never visited New England, but this book has given me the chance to think seriously about going there. The layout is typical of most DK guides, with much space given to pictures, plus captions and short blocks of text. Each significant place has a street map, overview text, and in some cases a suggested tour itinerary.New England is an extraordinary place, a landscape that has appeared in countless movies, vast and lightly inhabited, dotted with wooden houses and homesteads, and bound by hills and a rugged coastline. The guide points to all the usual kinds of attractions plus many that, given the size of the place, would be easily missed.I had a glance at the equivalent Lonely Planet guide, which is also very good, but I prefer the DK guide, which I found more useable. I’ve used other DK guides in the range, especially those for Italy, and found them the best in a very competitive market.Overall, this is a beautiful book, which at bigger size might make a good coffee-table book. Given its size, it crams in a vast amount of information, and still manages to be colourful and not look cluttered.

I'm loving the new editions of Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Guides. They've always been my first choice for planning trips, but being heavy weren't always the most practical books to carry around once at your destinations. The new editions are much lighter, with thinner paper, but still pack all the information you need in. New England is a large, history and culture rich area, so there's an awful lot to pack into the guide.The introductory 'Discover' Section gives you a flavour of that history, culture and landscape. This is followed by a separate and sizeable section for Boston (including Cambridge), then sections for each of the states. Each area has maps, gorgeous pictures, walking tours, all the attraction details, websites, where to eat and stay - all with website details for booking etc. Gone are the thick directory sections at the back. Fewer hotels, restaurants etc are now dotted through the main text. The photography is all new, they are slightly over-saturated for my taste, a little bright, but the details stand out well. Longing to go back to New England now for some leaf-peeping.

Reading this book has just added more places I MUST visit. The book was very interesting and on point. I think it shared enough without going too much, some books share so much you think you do not need to visit now! Well written and concise but packed full of useful information.
