Question 1

The box says it requires a 100 lb tank. I was hoping to use a 40 lb tank. Why is 100 lbs required and can I use only a 40 lbs tank?

I just did extensive research as to WHY a 100lb tank is necessary and here is why:  The pressure in a 10lb vs a 100lb vs a 250lb tank is all the same, HOWEVER, propane is stored in those tanks as a liquid, this liquid has a boiling point of -43.6 degree F (-42 Celsius).    To simplify it: a larger tank can VAPORIZE liquid propane FASTER because it has more surface area to transfer heat through as well as a larger volume of liquid to evaporate.     If you google "propane vaporization rate chart" then you will find that there is a relationship between the volume of gas, the temperature outside, and the size of the container (Tank) that holds the liquid propane.

a 40lb propane tank would work if the temp is at least 40 degrees F outside and the tank is at least 25% full, then you would be able to meet the vaporization demand to produce 30,000BTU/hr that this unit is capable of.   But with the 100lb container, it can be a little less than 10 degrees F outside and only 10% full and it will still produce well above the demand for this unit.

A possible solution might be: operate the unit below max capacity (medium or low setting) and you will not exceed the vaporization limit, but then... why not just purchase the smaller unit that produces 18,000BTU/hr instead?  But even that one is suggested to operate with a 100lb propane tank as well.   All that I have said can be found on the internet, simply google "Propane installation regulations"

Box says 18,000 BTU and 30,000 BTU? Which is it?

The one I ordered and just received 30,000 BTU infrared, propane.  Just verify that you want propane/gas or electric, infrared or blue flame.  I haven't had a chance yet to remove from box, and when purchasing I did read in the comments it was 5 plates but if you look closely at the above picture there are double that.  Same picture on my box.

Question 3

I had to run about 30 feet of black pipe to connect my heater to the propane. . Do i have to blead the line each time i change tanks?

Accepted Answer

You can use an auto switching regulator with two tanks to avoid the need to bleed the line each time.  Just don’t let both tanks go empty at the same time and you’ll be fine. This heater is tested up to 5,000 feet above sea level. We have had customers with success up to 8,000 feet, but we cannot comment on the performance or efficiency past 5,000 feet. - GHP Group Customer Support
